Canadian DMCA

I think this is worth noting, since it will effect a lot of people.  This was originally posted by the Pirate Party of Canada.

“After bill C-60, C-61 and the ACTA, Stephen Harper now wishes to enable a Canadian version of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. This ain’t only a blatant attack on our rights as it jeopardizes fair use, it also kills competition and free expression. This will not be tolerated.”

New Web Server

I have just moved all my sites over to a new virtual server!  Mostly because the one I was using did not have an easy way to upgrade PHP without breaking the web interface.  So far it seems to run with less resources and be a bit faster.

Let me know if any oddities occur while using my sites.

Organizations assuming customers computers are infected

This is actually a good way to think when your providing Internet related services.  Assume the worst has happened to your clients computers and create things that are still as secure as possible.

” “For years, security experts, analysts and even users have been lamenting the state of desktop security. Viruses, spam, Trojans and rootkits have added up to create an ugly picture. But, the good news is that the desktop security battle may be over. The less-than-good news, however, is that we may have lost it. Jeremiah Grossman, CTO of WhiteHat Security, said Thursday that many organizations, particularly in the financial services industry, have gotten to the point of assuming that their customers’ desktops are compromised. And moving forward from that assumption, things don’t get much prettier.”

“It goes on to speculate about home routers being targeted and infected.” “

It’s kind of scary to think of your router being infected though.  It would be very hard to detect unless you connected a machine in between the Internet and your router to analyze traffic (if at all possible with some ISP’s all in one gateways).  The hacker could redirect all or certain traffic to a computer that analyzes the data for passwords, user information, etc.

Google chrome speed tests!

OK, this is just awesome to the max!  They run tests to show the speed of chrome with, I shit you not, lightning a potato gun and “sound”.

Desktop UI

Apparently google just purchased something called “Bumptop” which is a pretty awesome touch interface for a desktop computer.

Here is the link to the story, which has a video demoing it too.  Pretty cool stuff.

Exaile Media player

While reading my daily feeds I saw this linux music player called Exaile.   It actually looks pretty awesome in the way its interface is setup with tabbed playlists and the left hand side has a list of artists (well the list can be customized by other stuff too) which is expanded with the little arrow to show albums and another little arrow to show songs in each album.  Very nice way to utilize your screen space!

Simplicity in Science

Science simplicity is a great video on Ted.com on the way we should be thinking and designing new technology, because if we design it very simply, we can then apply it in many different ways easily. He calls this ability “stackable”. Like how accessing a webpage works on many different levels (http protocol on the TCP/IP protocol through a physical medium, etc, etc, etc).  Simplicity on simplicity creating complexity as a whole, yet leaving it easy to fix if something goes wrong because we can pin point problems through the simplicity!  This creates reliable technology.

Ubuntu 10.04 thoughts

Well I have used ubuntu 10.04 for a few days now, and overall I like it. The integrated “system tray” is very pleasing. It not only integrates what I will call your “identity” (chat, ubuntu user, ubuntu one service, Facebook, twitter, etc) but it does it very nicely 🙂 Like when you put your status to away it does it for all chat clients, you can also broadcast a message to all your social services like msn, ICQ, Facebook, twitter, etc.

As for glitches, I have run into a few.  Like when I tested out the Ubuntu one by sharing a folder outside the usual ubuntu one folder, that went ok, but un-sharing it crashed naustils like every time and the folder is still shared.  Also if you use the new theme with the icons on the left, just changing the color of the theme will break the icon placement back to the right hand side… which might be nice for some people who don’t like the placement 😛  I’ll mention I did do an upgrade as apposed to a fresh install, so that may have something to do with some of the glitches (old config?).

All in all though, I give Ubuntu 10.04 a 8/10 because all the usual stuff runs rock solid and there are some nice new shiny features!  O yea they also fixed a sound glitch I ran into with 9.10 (pop sound when re-initializing sound card from sleep).  So that’s a plus!  I also just want to mention, unlike some others OS’s, I have yet to find a problem in Ubuntu that could not be fixed by yours truly (and a Google search).  This is one of the huge benefits of Open Source software!

Ubuntu 10.04 is out!

Ubuntu 10.04 has been released! Installing now. I’ll post my thoughts on it in a bit after testing it out ^_^

Test post

This is more or less a test post from my Blog (www.dragonwarz.net). I’m making sure my plugin will work to auto post stuff from my blog onto my Facebook!

Testing new paragraph(ish).
