Ubuntu 10.04 thoughts

Well I have used ubuntu 10.04 for a few days now, and overall I like it. The integrated “system tray” is very pleasing. It not only integrates what I will call your “identity” (chat, ubuntu user, ubuntu one service, Facebook, twitter, etc) but it does it very nicely 🙂 Like when you put your status to away it does it for all chat clients, you can also broadcast a message to all your social services like msn, ICQ, Facebook, twitter, etc.

As for glitches, I have run into a few.  Like when I tested out the Ubuntu one by sharing a folder outside the usual ubuntu one folder, that went ok, but un-sharing it crashed naustils like every time and the folder is still shared.  Also if you use the new theme with the icons on the left, just changing the color of the theme will break the icon placement back to the right hand side… which might be nice for some people who don’t like the placement 😛  I’ll mention I did do an upgrade as apposed to a fresh install, so that may have something to do with some of the glitches (old config?).

All in all though, I give Ubuntu 10.04 a 8/10 because all the usual stuff runs rock solid and there are some nice new shiny features!  O yea they also fixed a sound glitch I ran into with 9.10 (pop sound when re-initializing sound card from sleep).  So that’s a plus!  I also just want to mention, unlike some others OS’s, I have yet to find a problem in Ubuntu that could not be fixed by yours truly (and a Google search).  This is one of the huge benefits of Open Source software!

Ubuntu 10.04 is out!

Ubuntu 10.04 has been released! Installing now. I’ll post my thoughts on it in a bit after testing it out ^_^

Test post

This is more or less a test post from my Blog (www.dragonwarz.net). I’m making sure my plugin will work to auto post stuff from my blog onto my Facebook!

Testing new paragraph(ish).

Pope Rails Against the Internet and Transparency

I had to giggle a bit inside about what the pope said.
Link here
He says, “digital transparency exacerbates tensions between nations and within nations themselves. And increases the ‘dangers of… intellectual and moral relativism,’ which can lead to ‘multiple forms of degradation and humiliation’ of the essence of a person”.

I can see why, once people hear what some of our “leaders” are really doing, we won’t be so impressed… which will lead to “Degradation and humiliation” of certain people in power ^_^

Ubuntu 10.04

Sweet, 3 more days until Ubuntu 10.04! There has been a bit of controversy about placement of the close/minimize/maximize buttons, but the integration of the social aspects looks very promising! I for one can get used to something as simple as having to click some buttons on the left instead of the right. It may also help to distinguish Ubuntu over Windows (“You know, the left side button OS”).

Finally tested server backups

w00t! After a few months of putting off testing my business server backups, they work just fine 🙂 Like uber fine! It pleased me to see how easy it was to restore a virtual snapshot in ProxMox. The only real time it took was uploading the backup file to my test server.

It’s good to know I can restore my server in a few hours if it totally dies.

New blog up!

I thought I should put something up on my dragonwarz.net domain … and here’s my blog! Enjoy!

You suck Sony!

So how many people have heard of the things Sony has been doing with the PS3?
To sum it up, some hacker got root access to the PS3’s hardware through the OtherOS feature. So what did sony do? They removed OtherOS! Granted the OtherOS wasn’t exactly a great feature because of the limited RAM (256MB), but it was still awesome to be able to take advantage of that sweet sweet PowerPC CPU.

Now the only way to keep the “OtherOS” feature is to not upgrade the firmware… but you can’t connect to the online network without the latest firmware. Not only that but some newer games will probably be demanding newer firmware to run! And just for good measure, some downloaded games from the PS network require a constant connection with the PS network! Which obviously can’t be done unless you upgrade your firmware!

Lame…
